Help!?the fuel pump is located on top of the gas tank tank. there are two straps that hold the tunk up. un bolt them, recomend PB Blaster. lower the tank, un cliping or disconnecting any hoses holing the tank up. electical, filler and breather hoses, to the engine and return lines. slide it out, remove the retainer ring around the pump, lift out old slide in new. repeat in reverse for install. the filter is a cylinder that is located on probably a metal line under your passenger side frame. the line is connected to the tank. just unbolt it at bothe ends and replace. id check the filter first. if it starts, then its the filter, if it wont its the pump. the filter should be replaced either way though. good luck.I Need to change the fuel pump or the fuel filter on a 1985 cadillac deville. My guess is that your fuel filter is located lower on the truck than the fuel tank, so when you remove the filter you're basically just allowing the tank to drain. Get a fuel hose clamp or clamp the hose shut with some vise grips or something of the sort, and that should solve the problem.
If that's not the problem, then maybe you do have some fuel pressure left over from when the truck was running, in which case you need to relieve that pressure somehow.... remove the gas cap

If your car needs a fuel filter, then the fuel pressure is low. Your car will be hard to start or won't accelerate too well. If the sock is clogged you;'ll have the same symptoms.
I wouldn't replace the sock until the real fuel filter is replaced.

If you have an auto parts palce nearby, have them pull the codes for you off your diag port.I have a 94 sunfire that is sputtering and really boggy. i change the fuel filter and it has gotten worse.?When you ask a question, be sure to include the type of motor as it makes a difference in the answer and in this case it does. If you don't have a shraeder valve at the motor area, you will be running a four cylinder and that would make this a TBI which means the fuel pressure at idle will be 12-15 psi. If this is a V-6 motor, there is a schraeder valve and it runs at 35-45 psi. It could be the fuel pump and you are right in trying to diagnose it first as this is a costly and time consuming job. If you get the pressure and it is not right, you will have to change out the pump and in-tank strainers. If it is not the pump as in the pressures are good, I would have a throrough look at all secondary ignition outputs and the condition of the wires, coils, and spark plugs and make a determination from there. However if you are really paranoid then drain the tank out, re-seal, fill it with 3 gallons of clean diesel, bounce the truck up and down by hand and re-drain the fuel. In the assembly will be the filter, the pump, and most likely the fuel level sender with float. Sometimes you have to replace it as a unit I am not sure on your car. If you don't you can replace the filter if you do You will have to buy a new unit at a store and swap the fuel lines onto it and electrical connections etc. For tools you will need sockets ( My guess would be metric around a 17 but not sure ) a flathead if you need to take off the hose clamps, and 10s or 12mm socket for the panel and tank cover in trunk. If you have to take off the lines to the fuel pump you will need a fuel line clamp and A lot of luck. I personally wouldn't mess with it unless you HAVE to. Any questions Ill be around. Oh and if they are in the engine or under the car depressurize the system and simply unbolt/unclamp them, and replace the way they came out. Make sure flow is correct way. -mike.

Just don't strip the aluminum block - use the anti-seize and torque wrench!!! I would also spray Wd40 into the spark plug whole and let it sit for a minute before taking them out. I would use Bosch or NGK plug for this car. Also don't be surprised when half of these plug holes are buried in oil. It is a common problem for this car to leak the oil from the failed plug gasket. Replacing the ring gasket is another 40 minute job, and you would have to do several times for life of the car. If you torque down the plugs properly, it would not get bad enough to stall the car.
I would leave the fuel filter to a mechanic. Usually 5 series fuel filter is located near the rear sub-frame. But for these cars, I think is located under the driver seat. It is supported by small sub-frame and is pain in the butt to take it out. If you are experienced in replacing fuel filter for other cars, it should be straight forward. You do not need to remove the back seat. You have to remove the back wheel and the plastic innner wheel well though. It may be hard to manuver in the small space were the filter is if you have large hands. You will need to depress the tabs on the lines where they connect to the filter. There are 2 of them on each line that are 180 degrees from each other. Chances are you have new lines that came with the filter. They made a change in the filter to a longer one and the lines need to be used to fit it.
Make sure you connect the lines to the filter before setting it in place.
After filter is in place. Turn the ignition on and off about 6 times to prime the new filter.
If you don't and try to start it, it will trip an engine code. The code is no big deal if you do trip it but you need a special tool to reset the computer.

As for transmission fluid, I would change it at about the 75,000 mile mark.
First, purchase only fluid made for that vehicle from the dealer - don't buy a generic substitute at the auto store! The Honda's are very fussy about the fluid. I wouldn't take a chance on ruining the trans by buying a cheap replacement fluid.
It is very easy to change it. Just put a catch pan under the trans and remove the plug to drain the fluid. It is true that you will not drain 100% of the fluid this way, but replacing 80% of it gives your trans mostly new fluid in it. This is what I do. The service stations try to sell you a flushing of the system, but it is expensive (they have to pay for the expensive machine).
If you are really concerned about getting all of the old fluid out you can flush it yourself. Here's how: Buy twice the amount of fluid (8 containers instead of 4). Find the trans inlet cooling tube on the bottom of the radiator and crack it open to allow fluid to escape. Start the car and let it idle while filling with new fluid. When you think half of the fluid has been passed through, secure the cooling tube and top off the fluid. I think you have to blow and flush all the fluid out b4 you put in the new one, its not like changing motor oil so just take it to the dealer so you have the warranty on it aswelldatabase drawing a circle
As for transmission fluid, I would change it at about the 75,000 mile mark.
First, purchase only fluid made for that vehicle from the dealer - don't buy a generic substitute at the auto store! The Honda's are very fussy about the fluid. I wouldn't take a chance on ruining the trans by buying a cheap replacement fluid.
It is very easy to change it. Just put a catch pan under the trans and remove the plug to drain the fluid. It is true that you will not drain 100% of the fluid this way, but replacing 80% of it gives your trans mostly new fluid in it. This is what I do. The service stations try to sell you a flushing of the system, but it is expensive (they have to pay for the expensive machine).
If you are really concerned about getting all of the old fluid out you can flush it yourself. Here's how: Buy twice the amount of fluid (8 containers instead of 4). Find the trans inlet cooling tube on the bottom of the radiator and crack it open to allow fluid to escape. Start the car and let it idle while filling with new fluid. When you think half of the fluid has been passed through, secure the cooling tube and top off the fluid. Delaying the change will only result in a bit of rich fuel mixture, since the shortage of air (with a choked filter) will tend to draw in more fuel per each engine cycle. I would suggest that you change the air filter at your convenience as soon as possible, yet do not worry about it unduly.
In our part of the world if we do not wish to change the air filter, we merely remove it and blow compressed air from inside out which blows out the deposits and makes it good for a few more miles. I have a '95 Plymouth Neon SOHC 2.0 manual transmition. I've been advised to change the fuel injectors due to a starting problem. (car cranks but won't start (already changed fuel pump and filter)). I've got a hold some new injectors and i want to try them out before i send the car away to a junk yard. Any general instructions will definitely come in handy.

The fuel lines connect to the fuel filter with plastic clips in the lines. There are three lines connected to the filter. There is a plastic square on the side of the fitting, you need to push the line towards the filter and push in on the plastic square on the side of the fitting, and then pull the line away from the filter while holding in on the plastic square. Cover the line when you remove the line from the filter, the fuel is under pressure and will spray out. After the lines are removed, pull outward on the filter to remove from the bracket.

The only thing the bracket does is reduce vibrations and support the 1 pound fuel filter. You can then pull the fuel filter off and replace without reconnecting the bracket.

Changing Fuel Filter on a 98 Cavalier? Quick Disconnect?
I have located the fuel filter on my cavalier pretty easyily. I depressurized the system, but now I am stuck. There is a HP disconnect that I have never seen. There is a black plastic piece right where the filter inlet connects with the tube. The plastic quick connect thing looks like a soda bottle cap with 4 segments (it looks like they should be squezzed or spreak, but I don't know). I know Im supposed to do something with this, but what? I spent many hours trying to figure out how to get this off... no luck. I went to auto parts store and they gave me the wrong tool, so I don't think they know what Im talking about. Problem is, if the filter hasn't been changed in a while, the plastic is dry-rotting, and the filter is rusted solid into the fittings. Quick Disconnect?sounds like the squeese thing but if not i think.....look for the triangle shaped plastic piece and pull out from that side. a small screwdriver is easiest. nice word right? they break easy but also are easily replaced.usually come with the filter. and make sure the filter is the same it may not fit or the flow may be in the wrong direction.

I took the Line off the OUT part of the FUEL FILTER and it filled up an emoty Water Bottle in 15 seconds AND i can hear Pump working.
I took Line off and let some %26quot;Air%26quot; out too
Im now letting the Battery charge (???) as this IS weird, how it wont start sometimes..
I took out Air Filter too, as this is beyond me
I Know my Spark Plugs are OLD, maybe an Emergency Change? But Wow.. I NEED it to START!!
Any Ideas?

I changed the fuel filter on my 01 Pontiac Grand Am and dirty fuel came out the inlet side of the filter and clean fuel came out the outlet side. Is this common of a clogged fuel filter?How to tell if your fuel filter was clogged?A clogged fuel filter would not provide the proper fuel pressure and fuel volume per unit time even though the fuel pump was functioning properly. How to change a fuel filter on a 1980 chevy citation?
LOL too funny. Obviously, Eric and GearHeadDan are too young to have actually ever worked on a 1980 Citation, or too old and senile to remember how they were equipped. None were fuel-injected, in which case the fuel filter usually would be located under the car. And a QuadraJet would hardly be found on either the 4-cyl or V6 available on these cars. In either case, your vehicle would come, from the factory at least, with a 2 barrel carb known as the VaraJet. This is a 2 barrel with a primary (smaller) venturi and a secondary (larger) venturi, as opposed to the DualJet, which is also a 2 barrel, but with 2 primaries. That one's basically the front half of a Q-Jet. The VaraJet is more like one side of a Q-Jet, although it bears no physical resemblance like the DualJet does.
The VaraJet does have the same basic fuel filter setup as the others, though it's really a totally unrelated design in most other respects. It's in a cylindrical housing, attached to the primary side of the carb. Like the others, it also has a 1 inch hex built into the end towards the carb. Given the tightness of placement (on the 2.8L V6 especially), a special wrench was made for holding this hex, to keep the housing from coming loose from the carb, instead of the fuel line coming loose from it. Not strictly necessary, but much easier to use than a Crescent or standard open-end wrench. Very thin, with a specially offset head, about 45 degrees as opposed to the usual 15.
While holding the 1 inch hex, loosen and remove the fuel line. After that, remove the cylindrical housing. Inside, you will find the paper fuel filter, along with a spring. When you put it back together, make sure you put the filter in first, with the open end facing the fuel line, then the spring. There is also a gasket around the big end with the 1 inch hex which you will want to check, to make sure it doesn't leak after you put it back together. Tighten the cylinder first, not too tight, as it's going into an aluminum carb body, then hand start the fuel line to prevent cross threading, then tighten while holding the 1 inch end of the cylinder, to keep that from over-tightening.
Below are exploded views of the 2SE and E2SE (VaraJet) carbs in question, followed by the 2M (DualJet, aka 210) and 4M (QuadraJet) series.

First remove the fuel line (1/2%26quot; line wrench). You may have to hold back on the inlet cap to get the line loose. Then remove the cap, and you'll see the tiny filter in there. The cap is large so your best bet for that is an adjustable wrench.

There should be two straps that hold the tank up to the body of the car. You have drop them and then you should be able to see the fuel lines going into the tank. Take the lines off the sending being carefully that you don't brake anything, these metal lines are probably very rusty and brittle. You should see a large lock ring around the base of the fuel sending unit. You have to some how turn that lock ring, most people use a chisel and a hammer. After you get that off you should be able to pull the sending unit out of the tank. There are two types of fuel pumps that might be available for your car. One is a complete unit that includes a fuel pump that is already installed into the sending unit. Or what they call a cut away, which means you can buy the pump and strainer and install it into the old sending unit.

I am attempting to change the fuel filter under my 88 c1500, but the fittings have rusted together so well that I can't make any progress. I tried spraying it with PB Blaster and that didn't work. I have a 2004 Ford Explorer. We are going to change the fuel filter. I am told a couple things. First, it's hard because on my model it is above the fuel tank and second, that there is a special tool for removing the filter. Any information on how to properly replace the filter and what this tool looks like would be great. Pictures would also be appreciated. I've a 2001 Astra 1.7 DTi LS 16V diesel. I plan to do the oil, oil filter and fuel filter change myself on the car. I've all the parts.
I think the OIL FILTER is in a housing just behind the engine and close to top, which needs to be opened with a spanner and the oil filter is a paper cartridge type filter inside.
Regarding the FUEL FILTER, there is another plastic housing with a torx screw on top, is this the fuel filter? The new fuel filter is a paper type too which I think would go into its housing.
Do I need to bleed the system after I install new fuel filter?
Is there any special thing I need to take care while removing and installing fuel filter?

I was about to change the fuel filter on my truck and it looks preaty strate forward looks like the filter has pipe fittings on it. just wanted to make sher that I did not mess this up before I started
the filter is lower than the tank is that a issue or would the pump some how stop the gas from going down with gravity (cause that would suck if all the gas came out)
should I put some teflone tape or somthing on the fittings wen I put it back in so it does not leak

Don't use thread sealer on the fittings. This is a flare fitting. It will seal itself when tightened. Now take off the tank side of the line and stuff another rag in the line to hold back most of the gasoline from leaking down your arm. Just don't crossthread the fittings. This is not too hard to change but you will get a small amount of gas on you. Now go wash it off of you.

Changed fuel filter...now brakes?
I drive a Nissan 200SX. After a long, stressful day of trying to figure out why my car was sputtering and stopping, my father seemed certain that the problem was the fuel filter. So I got a new one and replaced it.
Now, when the engine isn't running, the brake pedal feels like it always did. Just fine. But when I turn on the ignition, the pedal gives my foot no resistance whatsoever. I am able to push it back about twice as far as I was able to before, and even when its touching the floor, as far down as I can put it, the car won't stop for a good 10 feet at least, depending on how fast I was going.

it is always adviced to replace the brake fluid every two years since it has the capacity to absorb moisture.

And also, you do have to relieve the pressure in the system before removing. I would suggest getting a Haynes manual for your car. You can pick them up at Autozone, Advance, etc. for around $10
